Chertoff: National issue can't be 'driven by local preference'
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The US Homeland Security Secretary says he expects construction of the border fence to begin this fall.
A nearly 200-mile section of the fence will be built in the Valley. It will start 15 miles northwest of Laredo and extend to Brownsville.
Michael Chertoff says he'll consult with local communities on the fence design, but he won't give them a veto on the plan.
The Homeland Security Secretary says controlling the border is a national issue that can't be "driven by local preference."
