Student with weapon taken into custody

RIO HONDO - School administrators will beef up security after a high school student is caught with a handgun on campus.

Officials with Rio Hondo High School tell NEWSCHANNEL 5 the student was caught Thursday afternoon and taken into custody by police.

A letter was sent home with students explaining what happened and saying the student would not return.

Most parents NEWSCHANNEL 5 spoke with say while the fact the gun was on campus is concerning, the school did a good job in handling the problem.

"They took care of it very well. It was very efficient," says Blanca Pello.

The school will bring in extra security on Friday to keep students safe.
