Candle vigil planned
MISSION - The City of Mission is preparing to honor a soldier killed in Iraq over the weekend.
Specialist Joe Rubio and his family have deep roots in the community. Rubio and his wife both grew up in the city. And Rubio's in-laws own a local flower shop.
City leaders say they're saddened by the tragic news. They want the families of both Rubio and his wife Jennifer to know their community hasn't forgotten them.
Mission Public Information Officer Aida Lerma tells us, "It hits really close to home, because they have deep roots in Mission. Mayor Salinas was called this morning by both the families of Mr. Rubio. The parents of the fallen soldier and his wife are both very good friends of Mayor Salinas."
A spokesperson for the city says there will be a candlelight vigil. But they're waiting on more information about the fallen soldier's homecoming and services.
