Suspect used girl as shield

WESLACO - A man accused of using his 2-year-old girl as a human shield is behind bars.

Ahmed Rashad Williams is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and using a hostage as a shield. He was involved in a police standoff early this morning. He eventually gave up and was taken into custody.

NEWSCHANNEL 5 spoke with the man who first called officers to the scene.

Humberto Perez tells us, "We were asleep and, uh, we just heard a screaming real loud. I thought, you know, she had been run over with a car or something. She was really screaming."

Police say that's when the argument between Williams and his wife moved outside their apartment.

"We came out and saw a man chasing a lady and her daughter," says Perez.

He tells us he went to confront Williams, when he noticed Williams had a weapon.

"He walked towards me with a knife, asked me if i wanted some of that. I told him you don't want to do that. And that's when I got a pipe and he took off running," says Perez.

He tells us that's when Williams went back to his apartment. Perez then called 911.

"I had to do what anybody else would do," he explains.
