Student says it's easy to get around firewalls on computers

BROWNSVILLE - Brownsville ISD police are investigating how a student at Pace High School started a relationship with a 20-year-old man using school computers.

The 14-year-old freshman was using the Internet and text messaging on a cell phone to talk to the man.

Tina Diaz, the teen's mom, says, "I do not allow her to go on to the MySpace and the YouTube and all these other chatting places on the web, so she found access through Pace High School, the GEAR UP lab."

A spokesperson for the school district says their computers are equipped with firewalls that should prevent students from visiting sites like MySpace at school.

But the freshman says it's easy for students to get around those programs, giving them access to talk to complete strangers online.
