Teens reportedly stole car at gunpoint

MCALLEN - Two suspected carjackers are behind bars, after leading police on a high-speed chase through McAllen.

Police say 18-year-old Juan Diego Villareal and a 14-year-old stole a red Grand Prix at gunpoint yesterday morning. Officers later spotted the car near 23rd Street and Nolana Avenue last night.

The driver refused to stop for police and instead led them in a chase down 23rd Street to the expressway. We're told speeds reached almost 100 miles an hour.

The pursuit ended when the car wrecked into concrete pillar.

"The vehicle caught fire. Officers had to break the window and extricate the suspects from the vehicle," says Sergeant Joel Morales of the McAllen Police Department. "One of the officers was slightly injured when he broke the window of the vehicle."

We're told no one was severely injured. Officers had to shut down the frontage road in both directions along 23rd Street as the scene was cleared. The road has since re-opened.

We've learned the 14-year-old will additionally be charged with possession of a controlled substance. Villareal will also face a charge for carrying an unlawful weapon.
