ID theft should be reported to police department and FTC

WESLACO - Weslaco police say several people are claiming they were scammed online.

The most recent case involved a victim responding to an e-mail he thought his bank had sent. The message stated they were updating their computer systems, so he gave his personal information on a web site that looked like his bank's web site. It turned out to be a fake site.

Money was taken from the man's bank account from people in Indiana and in Romania.

People are advised to keep their personal information safe. Officers recommend people memorize their pin number and password. They shouldn't write them down anywhere. Consumers are also warned to never give personal information over the phone or online.

You're asked to report identity theft to your local police department as soon as possible. And if you become a victim, you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
