Leaders say first phase of reconstruction to begin

EDINBURG - Senator John Cornyn proposed new legislation to repair levees in the Valley.

He'll be asking Congress to approve $125 million for the total rehabilitation of the levees. Many Valley leaders believe a strong hurricane would breach our levees causing widespread destruction.

NEWSCHANNEL 5 asked Cornyn how long it would take before Congress actually approves his proposal. He says that'll be up to Congress.

But Valley leaders aren't waiting for the legislation to pass. They say the first phase of levee reconstruction will begin immediately.
