District attorney requested Bazan's paycheck be suspended

EDINBURG - The Hidalgo County commissioner's court took no action in the case of an embattled constable.

District Attorney Rene Guerra asked the commissioners to suspend Walo Bazan's paycheck, since the Precinct 1 Constable had been stripped of his gun and badge. The Texas Supreme Court recently upheld a district judge's decision to remove Bazan from office, after he was convicted of theft.

But after nearly an hour-long debate and some heated words, the commissioner's court decided not to act in regards to Bazan's paycheck. They stated the reason for this move was because not everyone was present.

The commissioner's court also didn't make a decision in reference to the deputy constables working beneath Bazan.

According to the district attorney, the deputy constables aren't authorized to make arrests without a supervisor.

Suggestions were made, such as having the sheriff take over and possibly having other constables step in. However, no decision was made in the matter.
