Contractors working to assess damage
MCALLEN - Drivers are advised to avoid Mile 5, between Taylor and Bentsen roads. That's in north McAllen.
City officials say a portion of the road has been washed out. According to city engineers, an irrigation pipe leaked, causing the soil to be saturated.
They tell us when a car drove over the asphalt this morning, the road's shoulder gave way. Contractors are on the scene working to asses the damage and begin repairs.
Crews don't expect to re-open the road until about 5 p.m. today.
We're told the city already contacted a nearby elementary school and advised them to re-route traffic when school gets out.
