Nothing reportedly taken

ELSA - Vandals broke into Elsa City Hall. But police say nothing was stolen.

We're told the only thing tampered with was the paperwork in the filing cabinets.

"It's something that's strange to us that somebody would want to come in and get files, when they're public record. Make a request and we'll give you a copy," says Paul Vazaldua, the Elsa Interim City Manager.

He tells us he's baffled by the crime.

"For the most part, folks know money is not kept in city hall," he explains. "We deposit on a daily basis."

Investigators say even $50 in quarters were left on the ground when a candy machine was broken.

While the criminals ransacked files, they weren't able to get into a safe with confidential information and checks.

Vazaldua says the city secretary and her staff are taking inventory of the filing cabinets tampered with. He says it doesn't appear anything was taken, but they want to make sure all the confidential information is still there.

Elsa police are handling the investigation. They tell us it's not the first time a city building has been broken into. But it is the first time nothing was taken.

Officers say they're counting on the public for help. If you have any information on this case, you're asked to call the Elsa Police Department at 262-4721.
