NEWSCHANNEL 5 story alerted family
MCALLEN - A couple learned the contractor they hired was a wanted man.
Yesenia De La Cruz says she and her husband hired Guadalupe Sanchez to work on their dream home. They had saved up $5,000 for the job.
"He was gonna put sheet rock on the walls," she tells us.
Months went by. Sanchez never did the work and wasn't returning their phone calls. Then last week, De La Cruz's husband saw the contractor on NEWSCHANNEL 5.
"He saw his name and picture on Channel 5," she recalls. "He said, 'You see? That's why he never finished the work, never finished our commitment. He's wanted.'"
The contractor was wanted by the Hidalgo County District Attorney's Office. According to authorities, he's gotten away without someone else's money before.
"It was a dream we had that went down the drain," says De La Cruz.
What was supposed to be her dream home is left with unfinished walls, no ceiling and no windows.
NEWSCHANNEL 5 couldn't find Sanchez at home. Eventually, his lawyer called us back. He told us his client is doing what he can to pay everyone back.
Shortly before this story aired, Sanchez called NEWSCHANNEL 5 and said he promises to make good on his work.
