McAllen Yearbook
Special-needs students grouped on page
MCALLEN - A page in the Perez Elementary School yearbook is stirring up controversy.
The page features pictures of the special needs students at the school and is labeled "Life Skills Class," the term used for special education at the school.
Critics of the page say this singles out the students and violates their civil rights.
Nancy Garcia has an autistic son at a McAllen school. He does not attend Perez and is not in the picture, but his mother says she's offended by the page. She tells us the students are singled out every day by other children; they do not need the school to do the same.
McAllen school officials say they do not feel the term "Life Skills" is derogatory in anyway, but since parents have complained, they have recalled the yearbooks and are making changes.
