DWI Investigation
Some cases date back to 1993
EDINBURG - Thousands of people go through the court system every year on misdemeanor charges, from drug possession to assault charges. Fifty percent of those are in court for driving while intoxicated.
Most people who are convicted of driving under the influence lose their license. Some go to jail or pay a fine.
But not everyone faces punishment.
Sometimes the case is dismissed because the arresting officer doesn't show up to court.
NEWSCHANNEL 5 looked into reasons some of the officers don't show up. We're told sometimes their duties prevent them from attending, other times the officer has left the department.
Judges tell NEWSCHANNEL 5 they're worried that the officers not appearing is just another way criminals are getting away with drinking and driving.
