Suspect gave police step-by-step account of crime
EDINBURG - Lawyers argued whether the videotaped confession of a murder suspect would be allowed as evidence in his trial.
Alfredo "Fro" Valdez is one of two suspects being tried for the 2006 murder of Larissa Cavazos. She was a recent UTPA graduate.
Investigators arrested Valdez in Georgia a year after the murder. When he came back to the Valley, he returned to the scene of the crime. Police videotaped him as he gave them a step-by-step account of what happened at Cavazos' apartment.
In the taped confession, Valdez says he went to the apartment with three other men looking for drugs and money. He told police Mario Quintanilla was the only person who had a gun that night. He claims Quintanilla was the man that shot Cavazos.
On the tape, the suspect adds that night might've been a mistake. He says they were looking for the apartment where two black males had lived.
But the night of the crime, they only found Cavazos.
