Burn ban still in effect

PHARR - Firefighters say someone lit a pile of phonebooks on fire. That blaze split into three smaller fires.

It happened on South San Antonio and Las Milpas roads around 10 a.m. That's a few miles south of PSJA High School.

San Juan Fire Chief Tirso Garza says the fire jumped from one side of the street to the other. Crews from San Juan and Pharr worked quickly to contain the blaze. But trash and the winds didn't make it easy.

Garza tells us someone dumped the phonebooks in the area and set them on fire. He adds it's not the first time fire crews have fought these types of fires.

"It's pretty much secluded out here. They do a lot of dumping out here from what we can see," he says.

However, the fire chief warns everyone there is a burn ban still in effect.

We learned investigators will try to figure out who dumped the phonebooks in the area.
