Acting federal police chief gunned down yesterday
REYNOSA, Mexico - Mexico President Felipe Calderon's visit for a ribbon-cutting quickly shifted to talk about drug cartels and the recent violence.
Calderon was attending a ceremony in Reynosa for a new hospital for pregnant mothers and newborn babies. It's the first of its kind in the Mexican state of Tamulipas.
But the event was overshadowed by Mexico's recent war against drug cartels. Just yesterday, Mexico's acting federal police chief was gunned down outside his Mexico City apartment.
Before that, two other federal officers who worked in the Reynosa area were also killed.
Since taking office in 2006, Calderon has sent more than 25,000 troops to drug hot spots. The cartels responded with acts of violence, including beheading police and killing soldiers.
Calderon says criminals are trying to take control of the residents and treat them like slaves. He says it's a fight they won't win.
He adds he won't stop until the cartels are contained. He says residents should expect more soldiers and law enforcement on the streets.
