Classmates alerted administrators
BROWNSVILLE - A Brownsville student was suspended for taking a knife to school. It happened at Vermillion Elementary.
A school district spokeswoman says the student never took the pocket knife out of his backpack, but he showed it to classmates.
We're told those students alerted administrators. The knife was confiscated. No injuries were reported.
The campus sent a letter to parents about the situation. NEWSCHANNEL 5 got a copy of the letter.
Along with detailing the incident, it states staff strives to provide a safe and inviting learning environment. The letter also encourages parents to check their child's bags and belongings before dropping them off for school.
The school reminds parents they can't work alone and needs parents' help as well.
The student who had the pocket knife could face disciplinary action. We're told it will likely be out-of-school suspension.
