Men reportedly off duty at the time
EDINBURG - Two Edinburg school bus drivers are accused of drug trafficking.
"A decision was immediately made to keep the two individuals without pay, until we get to the bottom of this," says Jacques Trevino, the attorney for Edinburg CISD.
He tells us the two workers were off duty when troopers caught them.
"These two individuals had taken the day off. They were not in a school district vehicle. Not during their school hours. This is something they did privately, outside the confines of the school district," Trevino tells us.
The district found out about the incident earlier this week.
The school district's attorney says, "The Department of Public Safety made a call to ECISD PD and informed them of the two bus drivers of the school district were questioned and detained for possible possession and trafficking of marijuana."
The two bus drivers were allegedly found with 150 pounds of marijuana.
The DPS and the school district are investigating. They say they can't comment much on the case.
But Trevino reassures parents this kind of behavior isn't tolerated by the district.
"If a student is going to be expelled for being in possession of a controlled substance, we should be as strict when any of our employees are found in possession of any narcotic and terminate them," he says.
Depending on the results of the investigation, the two bus drivers could be fired.
Esmeralda Gonzalez has a daughter in the district. She tells us she was shocked to hear the allegations.
Gonzalez says the school's buses are usually thought of as the safest way to school, but now she'll think twice.
However, she adds she trusts the district will deal with the situation properly.
