Boy injured during motocross race
EDINBURG - A 12-year-old involved in a serious motocross accident is back home.
It took months for Joey Calderon to recover. On March 30, he seriously injured his head during a motocross bike accident. It happened while racing in Los Fresnos. Calderon fell short of a jump and fell down headfirst.
Doctors gave Calderon only five days to live.
His father, Jose Eusebio Calderon, says, "They told us the worst... that he may never wake up, open his eyes, or even move again. And just like I said, we prayed and prayed. And thank God, he gave us back. He's fully recovered. One more arm to go. He's gonna walk out of the hospital."
Dan Torres, the director of the Edinburg Regional Rehab Center, tells us, "I've gotta say this, Joey did most of the work. We guided him. We're his guides, but he did most of the work."
Torres says Calderon's determination is why he's able to walk out of the center and go home.
