U-turn reportedly started deadly chain of events
PHARR - Police are searching for a tractor-trailer driver suspected of causing a deadly accident.
It happened on the Pharr International Bridge five months ago. The accident left four people dead.
Sources close to the case have confirmed how the accident happened that day. They tell us there were three tractor-trailers and four cars involved.
We're told the first 18-wheeler was traveling north into the United States, when the driver decided to make a U-turn. That's what reportedly started the deadly chain of events.
The tractor-trailer driver behind the first 18-wheeler didn't want to cause an accident and went around him. In the process, that second driver picked up and dragged a piece of concrete wall.
A third tractor-trailer was traveling south at the time with four cars behind him. That driver stopped and turned on his hazard lights to warn the other drivers. Some of the drivers behind him got impatient and tried to drive around the tractor-trailer.
One car made it. But two others didn't.
They hit the concrete wall that was dragged into the middle of the bridge. One of the vehicles bursts into flames on the bridge. The other went airborne and fell off the bridge.
Pharr police are looking for the 18-wheeler they suspect started the chain of events that day. But Mexican authorities say it doesn't exist.
Law enforcement and bridge administrators on both sides of the border met today. Bridge workers have reviewed their logs. A Mexican official say there's nothing to prove the 18-wheeler was from Mexico.
He tells us the incident was a tragedy and he's wiling to work with U.S. authorities to close the case. But he says he doesn't believe the answers will be found at his bridge.
No charges have been filed in the case so far. But a number of civil lawsuits are pending.
