Harlingen Police Officer moved out of Intensive Care

HARLINGEN - An officer shot in the line of duty was moved out of the intensive care unit at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Officer Carlos Diaz's condition continues to improve. Diaz was shot several times while sitting in his patrol unit. The prime suspect, 18-year-old Abraham Mar, was formally charged today. He's being held on a million dollar bond at the Cameron County jail. NEWSCHANNEL 5 found out what kind of training officers go through when ambushed, like Diaz was. We learned training includes a dashcam video showing three Valley men kill a North Texas constable. "We try to show our police cadets this video to show them the realities that are out there," says David Osborne of the Harlingen Police Department. He spoke to use about intensive training officers go through. "We do train officers how to shoot from a disabled position, maybe using support hand instead of strong hand," explains Osborne. "Our officers practice these drills routinely at the range when they go out to the range." He adds, "There's no way you can train for every scenario. But we're hoping we can use instances and video to show what could happen and try to train the officers as best as we can and try to cope with whatever situation that comes up." NEWSCHANNEL 5 learned the Harlingen Police Department had just begun using what's called "active shooting scenarios." In them, officers practice with real-life shooting incidents.
