Driver bailed out of truck

SULLIVAN CITY - Defective equipment led to a drug bust in Sullivan City.

Police spotted a truck heading eastbound. The license plate on the truck wasn't lit. It's against the law to drive at night without having the license plate illuminated.

An officer tried to get the driver to pull over. But instead the driver drove over a fence and bailed out of the passenger-side door.

Police found around 500 pounds of drugs in the truck. NEWSCHANNEL 5 asked why smugglers would use trucks with defective parts.

Eloy Trevino, an investigator with the Sullivan City Police Department, says, "You see it all the time. Sometimes brake lights aren't working, or there's a broken tail-light. One of the main problems is greed. They want to pass the truck however it's possible."

Officers are now trying to figure out who's involved and who owns the truck.
