Galveston County jury resumes deliberations in penalty phase

GALVESTON (AP) - A Galveston County jury is deliberating again Wednesday the penalty for a man convicted of burning his infant daughter in a microwave.

Jurors rejected Joshua Mauldin's claims that he was insane when he stuffed his daughter, Ana, in a Galveston hotel microwave last May. The 20-year-old father was convicted Tuesday of felony injury to a child.

Then, the jury deliberated for 2-1/2 hours on punishment without reaching a decision. Punishment could range from probation to life in prison.

Prosecutors asked jurors not to forget what Mauldin had done to his then-2-month-old daughter and give him a life sentence.

The defense asked jurors to consider Mauldin's long history of mental illness and give him probation.

The girl is now with other relatives.
