NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - The World Food Program says one of its workers has been shot and killed by unidentified gunmen this week in northwestern Kenya.

The U.N. group says Silence Chirara is the first of its aid workers to be killed in the town of Lokichoggio. Chirara was the agency's logistics coordinator for Southern Sudan.

Kenyan police spokesman Eric Kiraithe has confirmed the killing but given no details.

An agency statement released Friday says the gunmen shot Chirara on Wednesday near the main gate of the U.N. camp in Lokichoggio. It says Chirara was pronounced dead the same day at a clinic.

Lokichoggio is near the border with Sudan and serves as a hub for aid agencies working in Southern Sudan.
