Dave Brown

Sports Director

Dave Brown shares 25 years of sports broadcasting experience with the viewers of NEWSCHANNEL 5. As Sports Director, Dave is responsible for the on-air coverage and presentation of sports events in our newscasts.

"I've always tried to give people what I'd like to see myself if I was home watching the sportscast. Wasting your time, or mine, with boring sports content doesn't work. Highlights should be significant. Scores should be timely. Opinions should be thought provoking. My goal is to inform, entertain, and enlighten our viewers about the sports in their world. It's the best job any person could have."

A Texan by birth and education, Dave is a native of Mineral Wells, a small town 40 miles west of Fort Worth. Well traveled as a youngster, he grew up in Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois. It was in the Chicago suburb of Naperville that Dave developed a love for the Cubs and Bulls and a disdain for ice hockey. At Texas Christian University, Dave interned in the sports department of Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA-TV. TCU and Channel 8 in Dallas led to a sports reporter position at KRGV-TV in August, 1975. Dave was promoted to Sports Director in December, 1976.

"Our ability to cover sports has changed a great deal since I first came to Channel Five. The conversion from film to tape, the development of live microwave reporting, and the proliferation of satellite distributed highlights are all things that have emerged in my Eyewitness Sports lifetime. We take these tools for granted. Regardless, my mission remains the same: Provide the best possible coverage of sports in the Rio Grande Valley."

Dave has been honored by the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters in the annual "Best Sportscast" competition. He is also a back-to-back winner of Sportscasting awards from the Texas Association of Broadcasters for play-by-play broadcasts.

Dave and his wife, Drue, have a son, Jeffrey.
