Joel Villanueva

Weekend Sports Anchor/Reporter

Joel Villanueva is a proud native of the Rio Grande Valley. He's called the city of San Juan home for most of his life. He has a wonderful sister who lives in New York City.

He graduated from PSJA High School. Then Joel attended the University of North Texas where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio/Television/Film.

Joel made his debut on KNTU 88.1's Late Edition, serving as the program's news anchor. He also began his work in the world of sports, doing play-by-play for Denton ISD football, basketball, and baseball in the university's radio station. In 2006, he was the television voice for the Mean Green basketball team.

While in college, Joel interned with KDAF and WFAA in Dallas, getting the chance to cover all the major sports teams in the Metroplex (especially his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys).

Joel used that experience to start his own television sports career at NTTV, where he hosted a weekly 30-minute show called North Texas Sports Zone. For his sports reporting work in school, he earned a 2007 Lone Star EMMY for a feature on sports broadcasting alum Bill Mercer. Joel has also been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association.

When he's not working, Joel enjoys going to the gym, reading, playing video games, and listening to live music. One of Joel's desires is to give back to his community by taking part in community service events.
