Live Spanish Translations of Newscasts

In July 2015, KRGV Channel 5 News introduced live Spanish translations of all of its newscasts. Viewers watching Channel 5 News in English do not see any change. Viewers preferring to watch the same newscast with Spanish translation just need to choose the SAP option on their Television.

"It's the same newscast our viewers know and trust delivered live in Spanish from our Weslaco studios by a team of very talented translators," said KRGV CHANNEL 5 NEWS General Manager John Kittleman.

Jenny Martinez, the news director at KRGV CHANNEL 5 NEWS, added, "We're so honored to have this wonderful opportunity to serve the community even better by reaching both English and Spanish speakers."

If you require any assistance changing the settings on your television or cable/satellite receiver, please contact the Engineering Department at (956) 968-5555. Anyone needing to speak to a Spanish speaker for help can call (956) 968-5555 ext. 5542.

In January, 2018, KRGV introduced a new channel to the Rio Grande Valley: KRGV 5.2 'Somos el Valle.' Also available on Spectrum Cable channel 1240.

Somos el Valle is the home of two Spanish newscasts: 'Noticias a las Nueve' airs Monday to Sunday 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 'Buena Dia Valle' airs Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. In addition, viewers of 'Somos el Valle' who prefer Spanish may watch the Spanish translation of KRGV Newscasts at Noon, 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. and all weekend Channel 5 Newscasts.

In total, 'Somos el Valle' offers 44 hours each week of local newscasts. (31.5 hours each week in Spanish and 12.5 hours each week in English)

KRGV, between its primary and secondary channels, offers 56.5 hours of local news each week.

What is SAP?

In addition to English audio, some programs also deliver a second audio channel. In most cases, the second audio channel is a Spanish feed of the program. The second feed is referred to as Second Audio Program (SAP).

The remote to your television may label the button to control that option as SAP, Audio or MTS. In many cases, you may just have to push that button to switch to SAP and back.

The feature can be activated on most televisions and satellite/cable receivers in the settings menu. Here are links to accessing SAP settings for cable and satellite providers:

Depending on the program you're watching with SAP activated, you may hear Spanish or another language, video descriptions, a duplicate of the main audio program or nothing.

ABC offers SAP on some of its primetime shows.
