Heart of the Valley is a station-wide initiative to use the power of KRGV to make a positive change in the Rio Grande Valley. We'll not only shine a light on critical issues but also solutions.

The Heart of the Valley program will go in-depth to illuminate one critical issue, need, or cause, to help make positive changes. From investigative news reports to working hand-in-hand with local charities to public service announcements that deliver important messages, we are coming together to unite the Valley towards real progress in the lives of the people who live here.

 Topic: Diabetes

Walmart and Dr. Yazji will provide free glucose screenings from March 26 to April 8.

Reports about diabetes in the RGV will air during the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts.

As part of Heart of the Valley's focus on diabetes, we'll host online question-and-answer sessions with doctors and health professionals about diabetes..

Diabetes is an epidemic plaguing the Rio Grande Valley. We have the power to change that. If we come together to educate and inform, we can lessen their impact and improve the health of our families and the entire Valley.

Diabetes will be the first subjects highlighted in the 2018 series of Heart of the Valley. From March 26 to April 6, KRGV’s station-wide initiative will include:

  • Stories weekdays on CHANNEL 5 NEWS at 6 and 10

  • Stories weekdays on Noticias A Las Nueve on 5.2 Somos El Valle

  • Glucose screenings

  • Facebook Live Q&A sessions in English and Spanish with health professionals

  • Together For Our Health, a free event at the Mission Event Center bringing together health professionals, patients, and the community on April 7 from 9 am to 2 pm
