CHANNEL 5 NEWS is proud to be part of the Rio Grande Valley. With hundreds of stories and events happening, we strive to bring you as many highlights as we can.
Segments like "
Con Mi Gente" highlight local people and culture. NEWSCHANNEL 5 also celebrates outstanding student achievements with "
Kids You Should Know" and "Student of the Week."
Our efforts in helping education include raising money through
Teach The Children and participating in
GEAR UP events.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS also works to help those in need with
Tim's Coats,
Wednesday's Child, and
Shareable Wearables. In times of need, such as the aftermath of Hurricane Dolly, the station helps organize the Valley Relief Fund.
Along with community projects, CHANNEL 5 NEWS raises awareness for issues like breast cancer prevention.
In 2008, CHANNEL 5 NEWS was nominated for station excellence in the 6th Annual Lone Star EMMY Awards.
Community features and projects are a longtime tradition for the station.
And we continue our efforts. In 2007, CHANNEL 5 NEWS added
Showcase, an online project highlighting and awarding school district videos.
