LA FERIA - A Cameron County resident calls 5 On Your Side, because she doesn't want a drainage ditch in her neighborhood.
Cameron County is starting work on a ditch in one of their neighborhoods. One woman who lives there wants to know why.
Cedar Court is small neighborhood west of La Feria. Denise Granquist has lived there for 14 years. She woke up one day to find construction equipment.
Granquist says, "They're gonna redo the whole area with ditches, destruct property for no reason."
While some people would be glad to have new drainage in their neighborhoods, Granquist says her neighborhood doesn't need it.
"I wonder why they want to waste money on something not wanted or needed in this area, when they have areas out there that it is needed in," says Granquist. She says rain has never been a problem there the way it is in other neighborhoods.
On top of that, she wonders what problems a new ditch will attract. Granquist says, "There's gonna be a ditch. What happens when the rain comes? It's filled with water. who's gonna take out mosquitos? Who's gonna take care of rats? Why do it? Why do it?"
She thinks the county should move the project elsewhere where it is needed.
Workers are also repaving the road there. We talked to Commissioner Edna Tamayo. She says federal colonia money is paying for the project and says some neighbors do want the work done. She also says you can't argue with four engineers who drew up the plans.
