BROWNSVILLE - Marta Mortera says strong winds tilted an electric utility pole in her backyard earlier this week. She saw sparks and flickering lights. Her husband called and Brownsville Public Utilities Board came out to help.

Mortera says crews told her to disconnect all the electric appliances because they were going to turn off the lights. Crews cut the wires, replaced the pole, but then Mortera heard a pop. The lights have been off ever since.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS went to the Brownsville Public Utilities Board looking for answers.

Lucila Hernandez says there's nothing they can do immediately.

"Once there is damage, we have to disconnect service because it can be a dangerous situation," Hernandez said.

Hernandez says the family needs to hire an electrician. Once that's done, they will call a city inspector.

If the work passes city inspection, then service can be restored. But the family says they can't afford to hire an electrician. They've resorted to doing things outside such as cooking and eating dinner.

An insurance agency is looking into whether or not PUB is at fault. If they are, the spokesperson says they will cover the costs. Until then, the Mortera family is left in the dark.
