Children Yearn for a Better Tomorrow

HIDALGO COUNTY - Francisca Salazar's children are rambunctious. They are full of personality and hope despite their dire economic reality.

The family lives in poverty in one of the Rio Grande Valley's many colonias.

The children walk around shoeless. They have no bed of their own.

Reaching the family required a trek trough mud, into an area of the Valley where the family of six lives in a small apartment.

Family Endures Hardships

HIDALGO COUNTY - Francisca Salazar's daughter Daniella has asthma. Even with Medicaid she can't afford to get the 7-year-old the medicine she needs.

The girl recently slouched over the family's couch coughing and gasping for air.

Salazar placed a nebulizer mask over the girl's face to mitigate her condition while she looked for a ride to the doctor's office.

The doctor referred the girl to the emergency room.

"It's very, very hard for me," Salazar said.

Experts: Education Crucial for Children in Colonias

HIDALGO COUNTY - Rudy Silva Elementary School lies in the northern fringes of Weslaco, between the city and a colonia.

Juan Victor, Ruby, Daniella, Monica and Sergio are students at the school.

"We have high expectations for all children. It's just establishing strong relationships with all children, especially with our economically disadvantaged children," Rudy Silva Principal Cris Valdez said.

The Family Update

HIDALGO COUNTY - Francisca Salazar spoke with CHANNEL 5 NEWS to give an update on the family's situation.

The family hopes to move out of the small colonia apartment soon. A murder happened recently just a block away from their front door and their neighbor's apartment was burglarized.

Salazar and her five children are on a long list for Section 8 housing.
