EDINBURG - The former chief of staff for the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is now waiting to see what her punishment will be.

On Friday, 40-year-old Maria Patricia Medina pleaded guilty to covering up a felony. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Medina admitted she helped former Sheriff Lupe Trevino conceal campaign donations by falsifying election records. Investigators claim Trevino received cash donations from a suspected drug trafficker in 2011 and 2012.

Trevino has not been charged with any crime. He resigned on March 28.

Medina faces up to three years in federal prison and a possible 250,000 fine. She will be sentenced July 3.
