EDINBURG - The fate of a man who confessed to murder is in the hands of an Hidalgo County jury.

Jose Luis Cantu's sentence could be announced as early as this afternoon. The 22-year-old confessed to strangling to death his high school girlfriend, Nelly Cases, in 2006.

Her body was found in a storage shed behind her parents' home.

Cantu's sentence could be range from probation to life in prison. He rejected a plea deal from the prosecution of 40 years in prison.

Meanwhile, the victim's family says their daughter's killer will soon pay for his crime.

"I want him to pay to pay for what he did. He can't back out. He pled guilty. He needs to recognize what he did," says the teen's father.

He tells us he wants Cantu to get a sentence that fits the crime. He wants justice.
