EDINBURG - The driver accused in a human smuggling attempt that ended in a fatal crash is being held on a $1.15 million bond.
Oscar Juan Carlos Sanchez Rodriguez went before a judge at the Hidalgo County Detention Center. His bond for a criminal negligence charge was set at $250,000. He was given a $50,000 bond for each of the undocumented immigrants he failed to render aid for.
The rollover happened on Highway 83 in La Joya Monday at around 10 a.m. Eighteen illegal immigrants were crammed inside the van Sanchez Rodriguez was allegedly driving. One of the people inside died in the crash.
DPS troopers say another driver picked up Sanchez Rodriguez at the scene.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS asked the suspect who he was working for, but he refused to answer our questions.
