PORT ISABEL - Prayer and a moment of silence marked the 11th anniversary of the Queen Isabella causeway collapse this morning.
Eight people lost their lives in the collapse.
The city of Port Isabel hosted a memorial at the City Hall. Today they remembered Robert Harris, Hector Martinez, Jr., Chelsea and Barry Welch, Julio Mereles, Robin Leavell, Estevan Fransisco Rivas, and Gaspar Hinojosa.
On September 15, 2001 a tugboat pushing four barges lost control and slammed into a concrete support column. Several cars drove right into the dark waters. The causeway was shut down for more than two months while crews rebuilt the section of the bridge.
In 2005, the U.S. Coast Guard found the tugboat captain responsible. They say he failed to prepare for a turn.
