EDINBURG - U.S. Border Patrol agents netted 21 sex offenders and street gang members during June and July.
U.S. Border Patrol agent Rosendo Hinojosa said, "By keeping theses dangerous criminals off our streets, agents are helping to ensure the safety of our children and the security of our communities."
The criminals are illegally present in the United States, according to a U.S. Border Patrol press release. The sex offenses include sexual assault involving children and aggravated indecent assault and corruption of a minor.
According to U.S. Border Patrol, the crimes stretched coast-to-coast from California to North Carolina and the Rio Grande Valley.
Eight of the gang members arrested are Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13. Agents also apprehended one member of the 18th Street gang. The 18th Street gang also originated in Los Angeles and is considered to be that city's largest transnational criminal gang.
