3 Arrested in Kidnapping, Human Smuggling Case

BROWNSVILLE - Police are charging three people in a kidnapping and human smuggling case in Brownsville.

Officers said the trio held three people for ransom at the Rose Garden Inn on Highway 77. The suspects were arrested Saturday. Police identified them as 20-year-old Luciano Romero of Brownsville, 20-year-old Patricia Ramon of Brownsville and 47-year-old San Juana Martinez of Matamoros.

The charges against them include aggravated kidnapping, unlawful restraint, human smuggling, and trafficking a child with intent of forced labor/benefit. Bond for each of the suspects was set at $520,000.

One of the victims was two years old. The other victims were a 32-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man.

There's no word right now on how long the people were held against their will. Police said the case is in its early stages and more arrests are expected.
