EDCOUCH - Three people were sentenced in connection with a human smuggling operation in Edcouch. Demetrio Vallejo was ordered to federal prison for nearly five years.

It was an enhanced sentence, after the court took into consideration that the 41-year-old sexually assaulted an undocumented woman, while threatening her with a weapon. After the Edcouch man's release from prison, he'll also have to serve three years of supervised release.

Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies found Vallejo and an undocumented woman at a home in Edcouch last June. Investigators learned he drove the woman and other illegal immigrants to a home. Prosecutors said he harbored people there and would bring them food.

Vallejo's co-defendants were also sentenced for their roles in the smuggling conspiracy. Esther Cano will serve two years in prison. Her sentence was enhanced, because the 33-year-old threatened two people after her arrest. George Love, 37, was sentenced to six months in prison. Cano and Love are both from Weslaco.
