EDINBURG - Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino asked for the resignation of five deputies in the wake of a federal investigation.

The five deputies resigned during the past 48 hours.

Trevino said the deputies were part of the Panama Unit anti-drug task force.

Two of the unit's members were arrested this week on drug charges.

Fabian Rodriguez and Gerardo Duran, along with former Mission police officers Alexis Espinoza and Jonathan Trevino were arrested Wednesday on drug conspiracy charges.

Espinosa and Trevino were fired from the Mission Police Department on Thursday.

Trevino is the son of Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino. Espinoza is the son of Hidalgo Police Chief Rudy Espinoza.

Espinoza went before a judge Thursday. Rodriguez, Duran and Trevino were in court Friday morning.

Police said Rodriguez, Duran and Trevino worked with Hidalgo County's Panama Unit anti-drug task force. Espinoza was part of a federal drug interdiction force.

Federal officials said the four men accepted thousands of dollars in bribes to escort and protect cocaine shipments.
