EDINBURG - A jury on Tuesday found Jose Luis Alvarez guilty on two counts of attempted capital murder and two counts of aggravated kidnapping.
Alvarez was charged in the shooting of a sheriff's deputy in Hidalgo County in October, 2011. He was driving a truck when a passenger opened fire on two deputies. One of the deputies was injured in the shooting.
The deputies fired back killing the aggressor.
Prosecutors said Alvarez was ordered by the Gulf cartel to recover a marijuana load. Two kidnapping victims were rescued from the truck after the shootout.
Alvarez's defense argued he was forced to drive the truck and had nothing to do with the shooting.
The punishment phase of the trial will start Wednesday.
