DALLAS (AP) American Airlines is trying to convince a judge to approve its plan to merge with US Airways and exit bankruptcy protection despite a government lawsuit to block the merger.
On Friday, lawyers for American Airlines parent AMR Corp. spelled out their request in papers filed in bankruptcy court in New York.
The government says the merger should be stopped because it will hurt competition and cause airfares and fees to rise.
Last week, the bankruptcy judge said he wasn't sure that he should rule on American's merger and reorganization until the government's lawsuit against the merger is settled. That lawsuit is expected to go to trial late this year or early in 2014 in Washington, D.C.
