Brazilians living in the Mandela shantytown of Rio de Janeiro awoke Friday to discover that suspected drug gang members had attacked three police shantytown outposts, injuring three officers and burning one of the metal shipping containers used by officers as offices.

Three Venezuelans died from gunshot wounds during weekend protests against socialist President Nicolas Maduro, pushing the death toll to 34 from several weeks of near-daily demonstrations.

In Santiago, tens of thousands of Chileans marched to call on newly installed President Michelle Bachelet to keep campaign promises to bring changes to education and income disparities.

"El Dueno," the resident cat at Paraguay's Government Palace, put in an appearance as officials waited for the arrival of U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta S. Jacobson for a meeting with President Horacio Cartes.

Mexico's government has been touting the success of a program to provide food help for poor areas, but a visit by Associated Press journalists found nothing happening at the three community kitchens supposedly operating in Guerrero, one of Mexico's poorest and most hunger-plagued states.
