,-- The worship will feature a half-day session on mastering storytelling on-air and online, led by Al Tompkins of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies. Tompkins is author of the nationally acclaimed journalism storytelling "bible," Aim for the Heart: Write for the Ear, Shoot for the Eye.
This session will share the secrets of great storytellers and writers and help broadcast journalists write clearer, stronger stories.
Tompkins will be joined by CBS News field producer and photographer Les Rose. Rose and CBS' Steve Hartman have produced some of the network's most memorable stories for the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley, CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood and The Early Show.
In the afternoon, the workshop features concurrent sessions by some of the state's best broadcast journalists and media law attorneys. Topics include: ethical newsroom decision-making, enterprise reporting, best practices of the seasoned general assignment reporter, developing sources and "owning" beats, investigative reporting, the latest "cool tools" electronic journalists are using in the field, using the Texas Public Information Act and federal Freedom of Information Act, legal issues online & in the newsroom and working with newsroom managers.
