AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A lack of about 300 lifeguards has limited the number of public swimming pools now open in Austin.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department will hold a lifeguard job fair Tuesday.
Spokesman Victor Ovalle (oh-VY'-yay) says Austin operates 34 public pools but only half opened as scheduled Friday, with three more opening Monday.
A dozen pools are closed due to staffing issues. An additional pool is closed for repairs. Ovalle says crews must also drain a pool stained over the weekend by purple dye in an apparent prank.
The Austin City Council extended the days and hours for some pools this summer, providing jobs for about 750 lifeguards 50 more than last year. City officials also wanted all pools to open on the same date, instead of staggered openings.
