Authorities Continue Searching for La Joya Police Chase Suspect

UPDATE (3/15): The Texas Department of Public Safety is calling the fatal La Joya crash a case of human smuggling.

Two people were killed Wednesday morning when the driver of a Ford Expedition fled from a traffic stop and crashed into a Nissan vehicle.

Six people were taken to the hospital and one remains in critical condition.

Several of those people are now in Border Patrol custody.

LA JOYA – Authorities continues searching for a hit-and-run driver who left five people injured and two people dead.

Authorities say the driver of an Expedition sped away after police tried to pull him over for a regular traffic stop.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the driver of the Expedition crossed into on-coming traffic, and crashed into a Nissan vehicle.

The driver and passenger in the Nissan are identified as Leonel Martinez Jr, 45, and Aurora Chavez, 69, both died at the scene.

The suspect fled the scene of the accident on foot, leaving behind five passengers who were transported to a nearby hospital.

The identities of the passengers and what they were doing with the suspect remain unknown.
