WILLACY COUNTY - Authorities identified the off-duty Border Patrol agent fatally shot this weekend. Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence said the man was Javier Vega Jr.

Two suspects in the shooting are being held in separate rooms at the Willacy County Sheriff's Office. Deputies already spoke briefly to them. The only description of the suspects given at this time is they're Hispanic.

Spence said investigators also spoke to the victim's family and are figuring out exactly what happened last night.

The sheriff said deputies got a call around 8 p.m. Sunday about a shooting off FM 1420, near Santa Monica. We're told it was the result of an attempted robbery. Vega, his parents, wife and possibly children were fishing on the levee when a vehicle drove by them. The vehicle later returned and the men inside tried to rob the family.

At some point, shots were fired. We're told Vega had his weapon and exchanged gunfire. He was shot at least once in the chest. His father was shot in the hip. The sheriff said Vega's mother called authorities about the shooting.

Vega's family members gave authorities a description of the suspects' vehicle. Border Patrol agents and DPS troopers assisted with the investigation.

Overnight, authorities found the vehicle on FM 2629, close to the floodway. The vehicle was empty, but authorities found the suspects nearby on foot.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned Vega's father is still in hospital and expected to recover. We'll continue to get more information and bring you more updates as they become available.
