SANTA ROSA - Santa Rosa police are investigating a major brawl. It started with a middle school basketball game. Now several people may be facing charges.
It's an investigation Santa Rosa's police chief says will take some time. Dozens of people are involved, both children and adults. The chief says he won't comment on camera until his investigation is complete. He did provide dash cam video.
In a video taken outside a Santa Rosa school, angry parents can be heard confronting officers, begging for arrests. It captures the minutes after a fight inside the gym. Police say it was a basketball brawl that got out of control.
A Monday middle school game between Santa Rosa and Santa Maria ended with a fight involving parents and children in which several people were hurt. Police say it was too chaotic to make arrests that night, mainly because so many people were involved. This week, police are contacting everyone that was there as they work to piece together who did what.
This statement from Santa Maria ISD was faxed to our newsroom. Interim Superintendant Maria Chavez writes, "The safety of our students, parents and employees is of utmost concern at our events. My office is in communication with the Santa Rosa ISD administration. We are collaborating with authorities on the ongoing investigation of this incident."
We are still waiting to hear back from Santa Rosa ISD. We've been told the superintendant will be in touch with us Thursday morning.
