HIDALGO COUNTY - He was kidnapped, beaten and dumped under a pile of tires. One week later, deputies think they've uncovered the motive behind the killing of German Duque Gonzalez.
A $1 million bond is keeping 34-year-old Jose Cervantes in jail. Deputies believe he's one of three men who kidnapped and beat Gonzalez to death. Gonzalez's body was found under a pile of tires on Minnesota Road and 107 last Wednesday.
We're told Gonzalez was killed because of his knowledge of a drug and human stash house in Reynosa. Two other suspects remain on the run.
"They were trying to identify a stash home used for drugs and human trafficking located in Reynosa. According to him, they knew their victim and their family were involved in trafficking drugs and human trafficking and they wanted the load. Of course, the family has denied all of that," says Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño.
The victim was on his way to work at a bakery when he was kidnapped. The sheriff says surveillance footage helped deputies track down Cervantes. Trevino says more arrests are expected.
